Why A Good Office Chair is Important

By Albany Office Supplies

Whether you’re working from home or working in the office every day, the most important part of your work environment is your office chair. It is very important that your chair is comfortable and supports your body effectively, to prevent health issues such as backaches, headaches, stiffness and more.

With a good office chair, you will notice improved work efficiency, better mood, increased motivation, less sick days and fewer medical bills. It must be upright and sturdy in order for you to feel great at work.

So how do you ensure that you are buying or using a good office chair?

Seat

You should make sure that your chair has enough padding and is made of a breathable material which is durable but also comfortable.

Chair Height

The height of your office chair is the most obvious and effective way of making your chair work for you. The best height of your office chair depends on your body and your height. A seat height which is from 16 to 21 inches above the floor should work for most people. Your chair should be easily adjustable in height. Your feet should be flat on the floor, your thighs horizontal and your arms should be even with the height of your desk.

Once it is properly adjusted, the right chair height will give you an optimal and balanced support for your back, legs and feet. The right chair height is so important for keeping good quality blood circulation to your feet, and relieving pressure points behind your knees.

Lumbar Support

Lumbar support is lower back support, which will be a feature of all good office chairs, to keep your posture correct while working. When you’re sitting for long periods of time without proper lumbar support, your lumbar spine’s inward curve will flatten. Even more so, when you are slouching. The lower spine will also weaken without adequate lumbar support.

Seat Width and Depth

The width and depth of your seat are also important. Standard width for an office chair can range from 17 to 20 inches wide. The seat depth needs to be big enough so that you can sit with your back against the backrest of the chair, with around 2 to 4 inches between the back of your knees and the seat of the chair. This will ensure that your body weight is evenly distributed across the seat, and is supporting your back.

Backrest

The backrest of your office chair is also very important, as it supports the natural curve of your spine. It should be around 12 to 19 inches wide. A good office chair’s backrest will be adjustable in terms of moving backward and forward.

You should think of your office chair like your bed. You wouldn’t sleep on an uncomfortable bed out of choice, so why do the same with your office chair?
