Choosing the Right Printer

Inkjet or Laser-jet

A good way to narrow your search for a printer, is by choosing whether you want an Inkjet or a Laser-jet printer.

Laser-jet printers are initially more expensive to buy, but they are more economical when printing in large quantities. This reduces the cost over time. Whereas Inkjet printers are much cheaper to start with, but they have much higher running costs, including expensive ink cartridges that will need to be changed. Brother have a large range of Inkjet printers which are also Eco-Friendly. Canon Laser-jet printers are a well-known, reliable brand of printer for the home or office.

Monochrome or Colour

This is a very straightforward decision to make when considering what printer is best for you. If you know that you don’t need to print in colour, then you need to focus on monochrome printers. Black ink tends to be cheaper than colour ink, so you’ll save money in the long run, as well as Monochrome printers which are cheaper to buy at first, too. Lexmark, HP, Canon and Brother all offer both monochrome and colour printers.

Speed

Printers will have varying speeds, depending on your budget, and whether it is printing in colour or monochrome. If you need to print a lot of pages, at a fast speed often, you should prioritise the speed of the printer over trying to find a bargain. The speed of the printer will show you how many pages it can print per minute.

Mono-laser printers can print much faster than colour, with many brands reaching up to 50 prints per minute, including Brother. HP offer a mono-laser printer with up to 65 prints per minute. Colour printers can print up to 30-40 prints per minute, and Brother, Canon and Lexmark are all good options.

Eco-Friendly Printers

Many offices and homes are now considering how eco-friendly the machines and products we purchase are. If this is important to you, you should look for printers that offer power saving mode or auto-sleep mode. This can also reduce your energy and electricity bills too. Other features like recyclable ink cartridges are also a feature to consider when purchasing. Brother, Canon, HP and Lexmark all have lots of Eco-Friendly printers to choose from.

Print Only or Multifunction

You can buy a printer which only prints, or you can purchase a printer which also scans, copies and faxes too. It can save you time, money and space to buy a multifunction printer. Brother, Canon and HP all have printers which can print, scan, copy and fax.

If you’re not sure that you’re going to need multi-functions, purchasing a multifunction printer may be an expense that you don’t need to make. It might be a better idea to purchase a cheaper printer, and then upgrade it if you find you need more functions later.
